Mexico City
At Christmas time of 2008, I visited a friend in Mexico City. I had no intention or desire of staying more than a week or two in the megatropolis. I stayed for two years. Then I returned in 2012 for another stint. And again in 2014. In total, I lived and taught English for three and a half years in the city I lovingly refer to as crazy and zany. Mexico City breaks all the rules any big city has – including those for ESL. It was never an easy time there, but it was educational and interesting. One day was never the same as the next (one of its great characteristics). I highly recommend the city as a place to live if given the opportunity. And the best way to experience it is by teaching English!
My ESL History
I got into teaching English by a total fluke which slowly snowballed into an unexpected lifestyle. Over the past 15 years, I've taught ESL to foreigners, immigrants and refugees. My students have been varied in their ages, levels and backgrounds. Most of my experience includes teaching adults one-on-one, but I have taught children and in language schools. Learning a second language as an adult (Spanish) has afforded me the opportunities to live overseas and teach. I've done so in España, Mexico, Guatemala, Turkey and Viet Nam. I can't imagine a better way of getting to know a country and its people.
